Chinese Medicine is a system which has evolved over thousands of years and it is based on a holistic approach. The last twenty years have seen practices in Europe and the United Kingdom flourish, with practitioners looking to treat the 'whole person' using many remedies including, herbal medicines, acupuncture, diet, meditation, exercise and massage.
The practices are developed around a number of basic principles which are outlined very briefly here. Where possible links have been provided to a fuller description which it is hoped you will find helpful.
The balance of Yin and Yang, natures equal and opposites, the five elements of Wood, Water, Earth, Fire and metal and Qi (pronounced chee).
Nature readily provides illustrations of Yin and Yang with Winter (Yin) moving through Spring to Summer (Yang) which in turn gives way to Autumn and a return to Winter.
The balance of Yin and Yang within the body is an indictor to the practitioner of what treatment is required and several pulse readings are taken during the course of a treatment session.
Qi is the 'vital energy' or 'life force' which passes through the universe and affects everything. Qi also affects the body in positive and negative ways, with the positive providing warmth, protection, activity, movement and containment, whilst negative Qi causes disharmony, discomfort and illness.
The Chinese believe the body runs on a Meridian system, a series of 12 major paths, where the other elements are carried in vessels or channels. The points used in Acupuncture and Acupressure lie on these Meridians.
In Acupuncture fine needles are inserted into points to remove blockages, to promote and regulate the flow of Blood and Qi. Diagnosis of the disharmony and the application of acupuncture to correct this brings the body back into harmony and health.
With David Burness, as with other practitioners, treatment will not begin until all relevant information about the patient has been gathered during an initial interview. David is also a qualified Paramedic and he uses the knowledge of Western Medicine and techniques to augment his use of the Chinese remedies.
For those who seek more knowledge David recommends the book "Complete Chinese Medicine" by Tom Williams PhD as a source of information presented in understandable prose.
